After getting rained out on June 22, Rayz Board Shop held a casual skateboarding competition at the Smithers skatepark on June 29, the last day of school. About 30 skaters came out to tear up the park.

Two-wheeled downhill warriors gathered on Hudson Bay Mountain in Smithers last weekend for the fourth annual Piperfest.

Some local junior golfers have been putting Smithers on the map south of Highway 16 recently. From July 5 to 8, two local golfers competed in the BC Junior Boys Championship, held at the Rossland-Trail Country Club.

Though numbers were lower than past years, that didn’t hold back runners in this year’s Smithers Marathon from adding some memorable statistics to the event’s 15 year history, while enjoying near-perfect long distance running conditions.

The Bulkley Valley Ladies Fastball League will be wrapping up their season next weekend with their annual year-end tournament, to be held in Telkwa on Saturday and Sunday.

The junior softball season has wrapped up, and the Smithers Smokescreen Peewee baseball team will be on their way to Cloverdale in two weeks for Provincials. League vice-president Bill Jex said the team will be playing in the C division, since it’s the first time the Smithers Junior Softball League has sent a team to the provincials.

Local mountain biker Dylan Marek will be well travelled through the province by the end of the summer, after competing in five B.C. Cup downhill mountain bike races.

Despite a several week delay due to flooding at the Smithers Fairgrounds, the Spring Heavy Horse Pull took place last Sunday, with nine teams competing, coming from Telkwa, Terrace, Prince George and Fort St. John.
