SSS golf team tees off with a win

Smithers Secondary School’s golf team has won their first tournament of the year in Prince Rupert.

“We have some really good young players on the team,” said coach Dana Gorbahn.

Despite competing before being able to play a round on their home course, the team of four boys ended with a combined score of 344, good enough to beat Prince Rupert Secondary by 10, and Kitimat’s Mount Elizabeth by 14. The boys have been practising putting on living room carpets, and perfecting their swing in the simulator at Gone Hollywood, enough off-course training to give the boys the edge they needed to win.

Gorbahn has argued to no avail in the past for a fall golf season, to deal with the lower mainland’s weather advantage; however, for at least another year, the team will be competing before they’ve even had a chance to play on grass in Smithers.

“Our season begins before our golf course or our driving range even opens,” said Gorbahn.

The SSS team played a solid round, led by Bobbi Joe Love with a score of 80. Gorbahn said he was also pleased with the growth of first year player Skyler Stahel.

Gorbahn said the team is looking to dominate the field in the north this year.

“We’re very optimistic about taking the zones and going to Provincials,” he said, “although we can’t say that’s going to be the case.”

Smithers will host a tournament on April 30, and zones are in Terrace on May 13 and 14.
