The Smithers squash courts hosted the Great White Bustard Squash Tournament last weekend, with 34 players from Smithers and Prince Rupert competing over four days.

Co-organizers Dave Bustard and Ken White were both pleased with the turnout, especially considering the storm that blew in on Friday.

“Everybody made it despite the roads and the bad weather,” said Bustard. “It was actually the perfect weekend to have a squash tournament.”

White said everything ran smoothly thanks to help from the pool staff and new manager, and competitors showing up on time.

In the Men’s A Division, Joe Rector from Prince Rupert took the top spot, followed by Simon Franklin from Smithers and Steve Weir from Prince Rupert. In the Men’s B Division, Don Chinnick took the top spot, followed by Rick Budhwa and Ron Saimoto, all from Smithers. In the mixed C Division, Dharma McBride finished in first, followed by Lorna Thornton and Shelly Worthington. Flint Knibbs won the Men’s D Division over Amilcar Guevara. In the Novice Division, Susanne Brooks beat out Jenna Mehr for a close win.
