Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price – from Anahim Lake, B.C. – will get the start for Canada in its quarterfinal game against either Latvia or Switzerland, and will presumably start over Vancouver Canucks tender Roberto Luongo for the rest of the team's Olympic quest.
Price has started in two of Canada's three games so far, picking up two wins and allowing a goal each game to Norway and then Finland.
Both Price and Luongo have looked solid in Sochi, with Luongo grabbing the shutout in game two against Austria, in a 6-0 win.
"He's the one playing," Canadian head coach Mike Babcock simply said, when asked if Price would be in net. Canada's quarterfinal is Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. PST. Their opponent will be decided this morning, when Latvia takes on Switzerland at 9 a.m.
Babcock also reportedly had Pittsburgh forward Chris Kunitz reunited with Penguins linemate Sidney Crosby at Tuesday's Team Canada practice. Patrice Bergeron was skating with Crosby and Kunitz on Canada's first line.
(Kunitz is one of the players on the bubble to dress for Canada, along with Martin St. Louis, Matt Duchene, and Patrick Sharp, who have all missed one game. Canada has to sit one forward and one defenceman for each game. Canucks d-man Dan Hamhuis is battling for the final blueline spot with Canadiens' defender P.K. Subban.)
On Tuesday morning, Team Russia needed timely goal to barely beat a stingy Norwegian defence. Alex Radulov led the way with two goals and linemate Ilya Kovalchuk had one as Russia won, 4-0, to advance to the Olympic quarterfinal against Finland.
Russia scored its final two goals in the game's 60th minute, with Radulov adding an empty-net goal and Alexei Tereshenko scoring with 40 seconds left.
Russia outshot Norway 31-22, but led only 1-0 after 37 minutes.
Slovenia also advanced to ice hockey's Olympic quarterfinal on Tuesday, with a 4-0 win of its own over Austria.
Slovenia is making its first-ever appearance at the Winter Olympics (for hockey) and is led by one full-time NHLer, Los Angeles Kings centre Anze Kopitar.
Kopitar had a goal for Slovenia, along with Jan Urbas, Jan Mursak, and Sabahudin Kovacevic. Slovenian goalie Robert Kristan made 30 saves for the shutout.
