Ten of Smithers Secondary School’s dozen qualified wrestlers are ready for provincials.

The Smithers Secondary School wrestling team is looking ahead to Provincials in Abbotsford at the end of the month, after seeding matches last week, which the rest of the schools in the northwest zone declined to attend.

Seven girls and five boys will travel to the two day competition to wrestle the best in the province. Coach Mike Richey said the team will have their work cut out for them.

“It’s going to be tough,” he said, but at least a few wrestlers should do very well.

Judging by recent competition, the Smithers crew are in fine shape. At the Alberni Invitational, five wrestlers from SSS competed, and all five finished in the top three of their categories.

In the schoolboy division, Aiden Watson finished first without much opposition, according to Richey.

“He just destroyed everyone, it wasn’t even close,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hilary Goble wrestled her way to a first place, while teammates Lisa Brise and Madison Beblow finished second, and Kate Richey third in their weight categories. The four wins were enough to earn the girls team the top spot overall.

Mike Richey is now looking ahead to Abbotsford, with high hopes for Smithers’ wrestlers.

“If everyone wrestles as well as they can, then we could get top five,” he said.
