Smithers Secondary hosts track and field zones

Smithers Secondary School hosted the Northwest Regional Zone track and field championships last weekend, with schools from Houston, Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Nisga’a, Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii taking part.

At the end of the competition, Houston Secondary (HSS) won the Senior zone title, while Smithers Secondary (SSS) won the Junior and Grade 8 zone banners.

In the Grade 8 Girls division, SSS’ Stephanie Wilson won the 100m and the long jump. Marlyn Morven from Nisga’a Elementary Secondary School (NESS) won the 200m and 400m, as well as the shotput. Zoe Bizarro from SSS won the 800m and 1500m. Jay Mah from SSS took first in 80m hurdles. Summer Schulte from Skeena Junior Secondary (SJS) was first in javelin. Kamalpreet Parhar from Houston Secondary (HSS) won the discus and hammer throw. Ashley Pence from SSS won the high jump, while teammate Alex Schell won the triple jump.

In Grade 8 Boys, Andrew Schmit from SSS won the 100m and 200m. Teammate Shane Berg won the 400m and 800m, and David Walker, also from Smithers, took the 1500m and 3000m, as well as the 1500m steeplechase. Colton Gammie from SSS won the 100m hurdles and the long jump. Keeping Smithers from sweeping the division was Caleb Burke from Kitimat’s Mount Elizabeth Secondary (MESS), winning the shot put and discus. Perry Terrell from NESS won the high jump.

In Junior Girls, Smithers’ Jessy Zemenchik won the 100m, 200m and 400m races, while setting a new zone record in the 400m. Hazelton’s Regan Yee finished first in the 800m, 1500m, 3000m and 1500m steeplechase, setting zone records for the 800m, 3000m and steeplechase. River Carr-Woods from Prince Rupert Secondary won the 100m hurdles, the high jump and the long jump. Houston’s Jill Bowes won the javelin and discus. Caitlyn Skafte from Queen Charlotte Secondary (QCSS) won the hammer throw. Madeline Lough from SSS won the triple jump.

In the Junior Boys division, Smithers’ Lucus Coles won the 100m. Teammate Cody Askew won the 200m, 400m and 800m races. Chasz Hodgson from QCSS won the 1500m. Hazelton’s Craig Penfold won the 3000m. Brendan Sorenson from MESS won the 100m hurdles, while Soleman Sayeed from SSS won the 400m hurdles. Lesley Green from SJS won the 2000m steeplechase. In field events, Damon Fladmark from QCSS won the javelin. His teammate Jacob Brooks won the shotput and hammer throw. NESS’ Brett Stevens won the discus and long jump. Cameron Netzel from Thornhill Junior Secondary (TJS) won the high jump. Sam Loubeyre from Hazelton won the triple jump.

In Senior Girls, Houston’s Jamie Beck won the 100m, 200m and triple jump. Sarah Murray from SSS won the 400m and the long jump. Morgan Yee from Hazelton won the 800m and 1500m. Kerrin Henrickson from HSS won the 1500m steeplechase. Teammate Lena Brodie won the discus and high jump, and set a new zone record while winning javelin. Janet Brodie, also from HSS, won the shotput. Keeley Dancey from Smithers won the hammer throw.

For Senior Boys, Mitchell Moore from NESS won the 100m and 200m, as well as javelin. Ryan Barnes from QCSS won the 400m and triple jump. Brent Irvine from SSS won the 800m, 1500m and 2000m steeplechase. Ben Thorne from MESS won the 3000m, and set a new record for the 1500m race walk. Nolan Bowes from HSS won both hurdle events, the 110m and 400m. Jamaal Stanley from NESS won the shotput and discus. Jordie Laidlaw from QCSS won the hammer throw. Kalum Witke from Smithers won the high jump, and teammate Julian Dejong won the long jump.
