Smithers hosts high school track meet

Smithers Secondary School’s Aiden Moore runs the hurdles at last weekend’s high school track and field meet.

Smithers Secondary School hosted a track and field meet last weekend, with schools from Prince Rupert, Nisga’a, Terrace, Hazelton and Houston attending. The meet will act as good preparation for the Northwest Zone Championship, coming up in two weeks.

There were a number of winners from Smithers Secondary. In senior boys events, Julian Dejong took third in the high jump. In junior boys, Justice Cuminsky took first in the discus, as well as first in the shotput. Carter McCaulay finished second in shot, followed by Mathew Walker. Gabriel Price finished first in the 1500m, while Cody Askew took first place in the 400m and 200m. Jesse Schaefer finished second in the 100m.

For grade 8 boys, the day was dominated by Smithers athletes. Glyn Doyle took first place in the javelin and shot, and second in discus, while Matthew Blum-Walker finished third in all three events. In the long jump, Aiden Moore was first, followed by Colton Gammie and Andrew Schmit. Gammie won the 100m hurdles, followed by Dylan Delaney and Moore. David Walker won the 1500m and 800m, and took second in the 400m. Delaney was second in the 1500m. Gammie finished second in the 800m and third in the 400m. Shane Berg finished third in the 800m, and second in the 200m. Schmit was first in both the 100m and 200m races, and Wayne Ferster was third in the 100m

For senior girls, Bryanne Haskins finished first in discus and second in shot, while Montana (no last name provided) place second in javelin, and third in shot and discus. For junior girls, Madeline Lough finished second in long jump, second in the 200m and third in the 100m. Alison Hudson took second in the 800m. Jessy Zemenchik finished first in the 400m, and second in the 100m. Alison Lancaster was third in the 200m.

The grade 8 girls also had a strong showing, with Alex Schell winning long jump and taking second in high jump. Michaela Schell was second in long jump and third in high jump, while Emily Murray won the high jump. In 80m hurdles, Jenney Hidber won, followed by Patty Spicer and Zoe Bizarro, who also won the 1500m and 800m races. In the 200m, Sonia Worsfold won, followed by Murray and Alex Schell. Jay Mah was second in the 100m, with Alex Schell in third.
