The Smithers Gryphons senior girls basketball team continued their superb run capturing the NorthWest AA Zone Championships in Terrace last weekend.

The Gryphons were the #1 seed and overcame some early nerves, despite jumping out to a 17-2 lead. They defeated Charles Hays 59-48 in a physical game. Tamiya Ness had 17 points with Haley Hanchard potting 15 and Aleigha Young-Lowry adding 10.

Hanchard was named player of the game.

In the final, the Gryphons once again faced Charles Hays. They jumped out to an early lead and this time did not relent as Hays focused on hard fouling to slow down the Gryphons.

By the end of the third quarter, the Gryphons were up 55-29. In the final quarter as Hays players continued the infractions, they began to foul out and were soon down to only three players. The game was abandoned with seven minutes left and the final score was 64-29.

Chantal Gammie led with 12 points, with Olivia Davey, Hanchard and Ness adding 11 each. Olivia Davey was named player of the game.

Haley Hanchard was named to the All-Star squad, Mackinley Unruh was Top Defensive Player, and Tamiya Ness was the MVP.

Coach Chris Van der Mark was pleased with the honours for the players but noted, “this was a collective effort with contributions from all 11 players.”

“For our nine Grade 11 players, it is the fourth year in a row they have captured the zone banner on the court. They will be awaiting the provincial draw as they get ready to head to Langley for the Provincial Championships,” he said.
