Prince George team wins Granisle carpet bowling tourney

The Granisle and District Seniors hosted the 21st annual Highway 16 event June 15 and 16

The Granisle and District Seniors hosted their 21st Annual Highway 16 Carpet Bowling Tournament last month.

“It was nice to see all the Carpet Bowlers back playing again, after being closed down, due to COVID,” said Kathy Bedard, an organizer of the event.

Ten teams from Prince George to Kitimat participated.

First place went to Prince George Team the Sun Downers comprising John Sunly, Leslie Harvey, John Harvey, Janet Dahlberg, and Luci Goodfellow.

Second Place went to the Houston/Fraser Lake Team of John Kornet, Carol Harper, Koka Kornet, and Ann Carter.

Third place went to Houston Team made up of Ray Andrews, Glen Procter, Bertha Hanes, and Marilyn Carson.

The Vanderhoof Team made a valiant effort, but ended up with the Tailender Award (given for the team that scored the least points. That team was made up of Elisa Bambauer, Kathy Friesen, Norm Friesen, Merv Jackson, and Joanne Penner.

There were also two 90-year-old participants in the tournament.

Carpet bowling is a variation on lawn bowling in which the playing surface and bowls are smaller. The basic scoring is the same determined by which team gets their bowls (balls) closer to the jack (a marker at the other end of the playing field.

“I would like to thank the school for the gym, all the people who helped in setting up the gym during the tournament and removing the equipment, after the bowling was finished,” said Bedard. “Also for everybody that donated door prizes, the ladies that made it all possible, by making all the meals and a great banquet for all the bowlers and quest for this event. Overall, everybody had a wonderful time
