While the last few winter seasons may have seen less than average snowfall, this year we seem to be getting enough to keep most winter sports enthusiasts happy.
Along with the snow, the locals have had plenty of opportunities to practise their favorite activities and the snowboarders are no exception. The local cadre of youngsters in particular have been developing skills to a high level and recent competitions have seen some spectacular performances.
Recently, Toan Krauskopf has been posting top finishes and the major competition held in Mt. Baker in Washington state was no exception. The young member of the Smithers Ski and Snowboard Club attended the Legendary Banked Slalom Qualifiers competition and placed first in the Next Generation category for athletes 11 years of age and under.
By virtue of his win, Krauskopf has been invited to the main event which will be held in Mount Baker Feb. 9-11.
Krauskopf will be joined by three other Smithers athletes who qualified by virtue of placing in the top three last season. Tosh Krauskopf, Megan Fraser and Katie Peterson had outstanding performances to finish third or better and qualified as a result.
As the longest running competition of it’s type, the Baker Legendary Banked Slalom is considered the most prestigious event available. Recently, the event has seen close to 400 competitors ranging in age from six to 70 years old.
The event offers the opportunity for youngsters to race beside legends of the sport and shake hands with the professional stars.
Coach Jason Krauskopf is looking forward to the event.
“The kids have been working hard to do their best and I can’t wait to see how they do. I’m confident that we’ll see some good results,” he said.
