Three members of the Bulkley Valley Athletics, a track and field club that trains in Smithers, travelled to the Spruce Capital meet in Prince George on June 11 and 12.

Zoe Bizarro of Smithers competed in the Midget division, and won all three of her events, including the 800 m with a time of 2:36.49, the 1200 m in 4:08.81, and the 2000 m in 7:23.05. Midgets run 1200 m instead of 1500 m and 2000 m instead of 3000 m. Bizarro’s 1200 m time is currently ranked ninth in the province, and her 2000 m time is ranked at fifth.

Madeline Lough of Smithers competed in the Youth division. She finished second in all four of her events. She set a new personal best in the 100 m of 13.89, ran the 200 m in 29.86, long jumped 4.36m, and triple jumped 8.88m.

Regan Yee of Hazelton, also a Youth, won two events and placed second in another. She won both the 1500 m with a personal best of 4:45.78, and the 3000 m in 10:34.52. In the 2000 m steeplechase Yee had shoelace problems. Facing competition that included a silver medalist at the 2010 Canadian National Championship, Yee finished second, losing only by a few seconds despite having to stop and restart after tying her shoe.

Yee’s 1500 m time is ranked fifth in the province, and her 2000 m steeplechase time is ranked fourth in the province.
