Northern Health to help provide kindergarten students with a healthy start in Smithers

Immunization; vision, dental and hearing screenings, as well as injury prevention and nutritional information offered May 6-8 in Smithers.

Protecting children against childhood illness and ensuring they have a healthy future is the focus of the annual Kindergarten Health Fair for local children entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2015. The program will be running May 6, 7, and 8 at the Smithers Public Health Unit.

Sponsored by Northern Health, the circuit provides a one-stop venue for immunization; vision, dental and hearing screenings, as well as injury prevention and nutritional information. Parents are offered further support if their child is found to be in need.

Providing health services and health information are part of a comprehensive school health approach, which addresses all areas of health through education, policies, community partnerships and the surrounding school environment. Children can reach their full potential as learners when their physical, emotional, and mental health is at its best.

Approximately 160 Kindergarten children and their parents are expected to attend the Kindergarten Health Fair. The event helps young children get off to a healthy start with their school career, so they can effectively learn as much as possible about the world around them.
