Hamhuis street hockey and new sign up Tuesday

NHL defenceman playing street hockey during sign installation event Tuesday in Smithers.

There is no word on whether Smithers local boy and Vancouver Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis will be the one calling “car” if any traffic tries to drive through, but Hamhuis will be taking part in a street hockey game and skills competition on Tuesday, Aug. 19 as part of an event surrounding the installation of the new Dan Hamhuis Way sign.

Things get going at 2 p.m. on the currently named First Avenue between Toronto Street and Dogwood Park. Prizes given out include an autographed Hamhuis jersey.

The town decided to rename the north end section of First Avenue to Dan Hamhuis Way in commemoration of his accomplishments as a role model for local youth and ambassador for Smithers, for his outstanding contributions to the sport of hockey, the community, and to the new arena fundraising campaign.
