Booze fuels police service calls

Smithers RCMP responded to over 100 service calls over Labour Day weekend.

Smithers RCMP responded to over 100 calls for service over the Labour Day weekend.

Extra officers were working to help with the influx of visitors to the area during the Telkwa Barbecue. Road checks and foot patrols resulted in many alcohol offences. Police issued nine immediate roadside suspensions and impaired charges, as well as a prohibited driving charge between Friday and Monday.

Fourteen people were arrested for public intoxication and released after sobering up. Two males are in custody facing separate charges of assault causing bodily harm and breach of recognizance. Both are scheduled to appear in Smithers Provincial Court on Thursday.

The RCMP want to remind people that alcohol affects everyone differently. Factors such as diet, fatigue, and prescription drugs can change alcohol's effect on a person. It is possible to be considered impaired and charged with a blood-alcohol level below .08.
