Attended a four day Provincial Womens’ Institute Triennial Conference in Prince George. Carried a banner in the opening ceremonies, following the Canadian flag into the building, keeping time to bagpipe music. Daily meetings but in the evening we had good food and entertainment. One group sang Quand Le Soleil Dit Bonjour Aux Montagnes (The French Song), originally sung by Lucille Starr. Starr was born in 1938 in St. Boniface, Manitoba, raised in Maillardville, a Francophone community near New Westminster. I grew up in Maillardville, I bet we attended the same french school. My older cousins were in the music scene, performing locally and probably knew her. Many memories. Everything we needed had been forgotten upstairs requiring trip after trip up and down those stairs. I got pretty good after the twentieth time.
A lovely Strawberry Tea hosted by the Ladies of the Royal Purple. Entertainment provided by Sweet Harmony. Strawberry shortcake, whipping cream and tea served. Annabelle Tucker and her great-grandson Ethan Tucker served our table. He looked smart in his white shirt and tie, saying he dresses like this to attend hockey events.
ElderCollege, for those 50-plus will meet Friday, June 17, 9:30 a.m. at the new college campus, room 122. Take a tour, review course descriptions, have a say in how ElderCollege should proceed.

Groundbreakers update: new project, Beyond the Market - Growing the North. The aim is to link local growers and meat producers with commercial and retail customers in an effort to strengthen and diversify the agriculture industry in the region from Valemount to Terrace. “Big Beef” beefsteak tomato plants in four inch pots, ready to plant. Watch for the Smithers Library book sale on Main Street during the Downtown Merchants’ Festival. We will be donating all monies raised from this book sale towards the Slave Lake Library that recently burnt down. We are working hard at raising money for a new library here and I can only imagine how devastating if, once we have it built, it burns to the ground. Our hearts go out to that community. If you do not need a book right now, we will gladly accept a donation for them.
