April 10-to-16 is National Volunteer Week. Celebrate and thank volunteers by nominating them as a “shining star”. Nominate individual volunteers or a volunteer group (or both!), also outstandingly helpful community members and organizations that are not your direct volunteers. Information will be posted on www.scsa.ca. Check out www.volunteer.ca/nvw (Volunteer Canada’s National Volunteer Week website). Create an e-card to honour volunteers.

There is a movement afoot to put together an Adult’s Clubs Day in September to promote and encourage active bodies and brains in our community. Help seniors get ready for warmer weather with yard clean up or garden set up. Volunteer for Helping Hands is now accepting registration from seniors and persons with disabilities who need a bit of help as well as volunteers to help. Call Andrea at 250-847-9515.

The Health Information Hub (HI Hub) needs volunteers to provide publicly available health information and help individuals find more information for their health situation. Call 250-877-4424 to get more information.

Community Learning Smithers needs tutors for their one-on-one adult literacy program.  Free training provided. Call Joanne at 250-847-9515.

Support your local Art Gallery for these  upcoming events: Divas & Friends concert at the Della Herman Theatre in May; Midsummer Music Festival chili bowls; and the 6x6 show. Put your organizing skills to work and take on an entire event, or just help out for a shift or two. Gallery Sitters are also needed for two-hour shifts. Planning a vacation out of Canada? Passport Canada has changed their proof of Canadian citizenship as of Feb. 1, 2011. They will only accept a birth certificate or certificate of citizenship as proof.
