Some cool summer facts

Lorraine Doiron fills the town in on upcoming events.

Fact: (if we ever get summer) a fan does not cool air but increases air circulation over skin, which speeds evaporation of moisture and makes one feel cooler. Actually, the fan’s motor increases air temperature.

I have a new walking buddy and suddenly the day feels less empty. We went for our first walk, just a short one to get the feel of things. Her name is Rosie, a four year old pug, like my other two. I look forward to many days of walks and sharing a nap on the couch during Oprah.

Did you ever wonder why time seems to pass quickly as we age?  Scientists say the perception of speeding time is a global phenomenon, common across all cultures, no one really knows why. One theory is that the aging brain loses the ability to measure time accurately. The speed that brain cells beat or pulse slows down, seems the aging brain thinks more slowly, making the world appear to move faster. So when I am late I could blame it on a scientific theory instead of forgetting what time it is.

People who love libraries are touched by the destruction of the Slave Lake Library. Deborah Kendze, Manager of the Rotary Club of Slave Lake Public Library, is working on a number of initiatives to assist the Slave Lake Library as it tries to put services in place after the devastating fire that destroyed their new library. Temporary library quarters have been identified  in the basement of a building formerly used for government offices, planning for a two to three year stay in that location.  Strathcona County Library is donating the bookmobile that it recently replaced with a new one, to Slave Lake for the summer, coming complete with newly stocked books and materials. Approximately 15,000 books and other items have been donated, all needing to be sorted, evaluated and if included in the new collection, catalogued, processed and stored until space is available. With the expectation that donated books will continue to arrive there is now a stronger need for funds to help in the rebuilding efforts.  If individuals and organizations wish to donate funds directly, make cheques payable to the Slave Lake Regional Library Board, The Peace Library System, 8301 – 110 Street, Grande Prairie, AB T8W 6T2, or via the “Make a Donation” link on the library’s website: http://www.slavelakelibrary.ab.ca/Make-A-Donation

Closing with: The golden opportunity you are seeking is in yourself. It is not in your environment, it is not in luck or chance, or the help of others; it is in yourself alone. Orison Swett Marden
