A green burial is intriguing. This is a brand-new concept for me and it is alluring for some.
We are put into the ground with only biodegradable wrapping or caskets. No jewelry on our person or mementos to mark our spot. Flowers are OK. Telkwa council approved a green burial site at the Telkwa cemetery in 2022.
I got a call from a Smithers’ resident, Maryetta Goodacre, she said she wanted to be buried in her hometown, Smithers. And a green burial is all that would really work for her.
If it is something that you, as well, would be interested in there is a lobby group working with Smithers Town Council to see if it can happen for Smithers. Contact Kathleen Ruff at kateruff2@gmail.com to add your voice or get more information.
A HAPPENING PLACE
The Royal Canadian Legion is a place to go this winter for some fun. I got an invitation from Tom Roper. He bought me a cola which put me into the draw for “Catch the Ace”. Each week a person’s drink ticket (or tickets) goes into a pot. At 6 p.m. a ticket is drawn and the person with the matching ticket gets to draw from a deck of cards. If they get the Ace of Spades they win the pot …or it carries over to the next week.
A little tension is brewing because there are only three cards left and the pot is up to $2,500 for the next draw.
Along with their scheduled events — Wednesday’s “Catch the Ace,” Friday’s burger night and meat draw and Saturday afternoon meat draw — we can also watch for live musical events
On August 10, 1919 an inaugural meeting for an election of officers was held and the first Smithers branch, under the constitution and bylaws of the Great War Veterans Association, was formed.
January 1, 2025 the Legion got a new president, Kristal Grenkie. Her phone number is on the Royal Canadian Branch 63 answering machine with an invitation to give her a call if you wish to rent the hall for your event.
The meeting with Tom Roper was to discuss his podcast on CICK Radio 93.9 FM. We collaborate with each other, a little, about the happenings in our valley. He invited me to chat with him Monday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.
It should be interesting where that takes us.
