Dear Nathan Cullen,

As your constituent, I am writing to ask you to support Private Member’s Bill C-291 for mandatory labelling of genetically modified (GM) food.

What concerns me is that genetically modified seeds are hybrid to withstand pesticides, most commonly RoundUp which contains glyphosate. This spraying goes right into the food, then we eat it and it’s in our bodies. Worldwide organizations are duking it out as to whether or not it’s cancer-causing. It’s in one-third of Canadian food. Monsanto is doing a mass population experiment on us health-wise and the results aren’t conclusive yet. Monsanto says it’s not cancer-causing but other studies say it may cause cancer. Some even say probable. Personally I don’t put my trust in the side making the massive profits and with the most to lose; I might have more faith in the independent studies.

It reminds me of what everyone said about smoking for years. It’s hard not to feel like a human experiment for these chemicals. Time will tell. Which studies are correct we don’t know conclusively yet. In the meantime it sure would be nice to have labels so one could make their own choice whether or not to consume these products. We have food labels for a reason.

Personally I believe it will be a big hit in GMO food Co. profits if it’s done. The food companies would rather keep making profits from this type of food production and keep us in the dark like sheep. Surely there is a reason they don’t want us to know what we are eating and hence the lack of information on packaging. Regardless it does seem like a Canadian right to be able to be informed and choose what we consume!

Please support this bill to help to safeguard our rights to healthy food and to make informed choices for our families.

Sincerely,

Lois Aylen
