Keeping the parade a safe one

Marisca hopes something can change to keep the fall fair parade safe in the future.

The Sticky Files

Summer seems to be behind us now and just a distant memory. However, the number of people who are still commenting on the fall fair parade is surprising.

Usually, the parade gets forgotten about once the BVX starts. This year seemed different. There were a lot of new floats and some exciting new things to look at.

You could feel the amount of energy and care people and businesses put into the parade and it is incredible. My children had a blast, and I did too.

My favourite part was seeing the donkeys dressed up.

However, the other part of the parade that stuck out for me was the amount of candy my children got. I don’t mean to sound like a party pooper, but it was too much.

My eldest daughter grabbed a bag before we left and it was full. My middle daughter filled her pockets and ended up having to put some of her candy in her sister’s bag. My youngest was just filling her mouth.

I realize that I am the parent and should regulate that but it is so hard when people are throwing candy at your children. One or two lollipops is fun. Maybe a chocolate bar is okay. But the amount was outstanding.

I don’t exactly know what the solution is, because everyone wants to hand out candy and be fun. And maybe I am alone in thinking that it was all too much.

But the other problem that arose with all that candy was the danger of getting it. I know that parade participants are asked to hand candy to children but so many people threw it, which caused kids to run into the road to grab it and, of course, they aren’t paying attention and people driving floats can’t always see small bodies directly in front of them.

And there were some big trucks, and also big horses. I saw a logging truck (dressed up as a cow, which was adorable) and big fire trucks. I saw so many kids run way too close to those big tires.

My children and I couldn’t see much because of the young teens running in front of us constantly to pick up the goodies that were thrown on the road.

It is an accident waiting to happen. I hope organizers can find a solution before someone gets hurt. We like the parade and love watching all the floats. It is so exciting and I know people put so much time into giving the community a good experience.

I just want it to be a safe one.
