I read Jodi Devries’ letter (published Jan. 3) with special interest because I have a son, now 36 years old, who was born at 26 weeks and weighed 1,000 grams (2 pounds, 3 ounces).
He spent two-and-a-half months in an incubator but received hours of gentle touching and affection. He has two older sisters, one four years older who particularly doted on him. Many photographs show her holding his hand and looking at him, not the camera — just as I imagine you do with your baby brother. Now my son is a teacher and returns the caring shown to him to all around him, family, friends and students.
And so Jodi I agree with you, pre-born babies are people.
