Crucial to eat, buy local

Editor :

With everything that is happening in the world today it is becoming more and more evident just how important it is for our region in which we live to have a secure local healthy food supply system. Just check out the origin of food available in our supermarkets today. The vast majority of it isn’t even from our own country, let alone our own region. Even during the summer months this is still the case. For shame!

Before the people of our valley became so dangerously dependent on ‘far away food’ we were a lesson on self-sufficiency. We were able to produce or gather our own beef, lamb, pork, poultry, milk, cheese, cream, butter, etc. More herbs and vegetables that can be found right here in our own backyard.

How did this dangerous change in our food system happen? How can we make it right again?

The main reasons for this unfortunate turn of events is due to the introduction of fat government subsidies, which were handed to the giant factory-farm food producers and processors. Followed by unreasonable regulations imposed on the small scale, local food producers and of course cheap labour and virtually no regulations of third-world country food production.

How can we make it right again?

Support and enjoy the safe healthy and environmentally friendly benefits of our local farmers.

As my friend Joe at Health Hug Organic Vegetables once told me, “the more they buy, the more we grow. The more we grow, the more food security we the people of the Bulkey Valley will have.” It’s as simple as that.
