MANHAS, Surendar (Sindy) Singh. Born September 4, 1931 in Dharmsala, India. Passed away peacefully at home on August 2nd, 2010 in Surrey, B.C. with his loving wife holding his hand. Survived by his wife Saroj, his daughter Sonia (John), son Reg (Wendy) and his four grandchildren Leela, Sena, Evan and Nathan.

Sindy immigrated to Canada in 1958 and spent virtually his entire career teaching elementary school in Telkwa and Smithers, B.C., where he taught a generation of young people. He and his wife Saroj first lived together in Telkwa in a cabin along the river, and then moved into “town” where they built their family home on 7th Avenue and raised Reg and Sonia. He developed many great friendships across the communities of the central interior, and he embraced Smithers as “home.”

Sindy believed strongly in civic engagement and volunteerism, and served as a member of the Lions Club in Smithers and Surrey for over thirty years. He and his wife moved from Smithers to Surrey in 2001 in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Sindy’s kindness, generosity, and wisdom touched many lives, and he will be sorely missed.
