November 16, 1923 - April 14, 2019
Rose Bourne was born to Margaret and George Smith in Saskatoon, Sask. on November 16, 1923. She had a long and full life, passing peacefully on April 14, 2019 at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital in Smithers.
As a child, she and her family moved to Vancouver, where she and her older sister Margie raised her 2 younger brothers, Ted and Wes, while her mother worked long hours
as a nurse. Despite any hardships, she had fond memories of her childhood, especially playing baseball. After graduating from King George High School, she held many jobs with banks, department stores, and Boeing Aircraft where she became "Rosie the Riveter".
She joined the army for 2.5 yrs., and upon discharge stayed in Toronto, working at various interesting jobs. After returning to Vancouver, she married her childhood buddy Norman Bourne, on Christmas day in 1951. She and Norm raised 6 children, living mostly on Vancouver Island until they moved to Telkwa in 1992, and then to Smithers after Norm died in 1997.
Rose enjoyed many creative endeavors and activities including sewing, quilting, cross stitch, paper toll, line dancing, choir (The Pretenders), oil painting & so many others.
After moving to Smithers, she shared a rich social life with her many friends (her bestie-Pat Peters), neighbours and her church community.
Rose was exceptionally generous, sponsoring many foster children worldwide, and supporting a huge number of charitable associations and projects. She will be greatly missed by family and friends and community.
A Memorial for Rose will be held on May 3, 2019 at 1 pm at the Christian Reformed Church in Smithers. Everyone who would like to attend is welcome.
