It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Mother, Pearl Ellen Wall (Hann) on Mother's Day, May 9, 2021, in her 101st year. Pearl was born on September 22, 1920, the third eldest daughter of Ernest and Addie Hann, pioneers of the beautiful Bulkley Valley.
Pearl was predeceased by her husband, Alton, in 1972, son George in 2012, and daughters, Colleen in 2010 and Joan in 2019. She is survived by her sisters, Patricia McCammon of Smithers and Roberta Robinson of Chilliwack. She will be deeply and forever missed and loved by her children, Leona (Alan), Betty (Bryan), Barbara (Don), and Jerry (Debbie).
She was always very supportive and adoring of her 15 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
She grew up on Broadway Avenue in Smithers, married and raised a family on Alfred Avenue, close to the family business, Wall Electric Ltd. Her children remember with great fondness, coming home to freshly baked homemade bread and buns every Saturday.
Cooking was her passion and good home cooked meals were her specialty. With her husband, Al, they built a new home in 1963 on 16th Avenue where she had beautiful vegetable and flower gardens.
Sadly, Al passed away in August, 1972. She then built her home of 35 years on the Dohler Flats, Rosenthal Road, and lived there until 2017. Pearl was affectionately and popularly known as the "Queen of Rosenthal Road" by her many neighbours and friends.
She loved the tranquil setting down by the river, surrounded by trees and her flower gardens flourishing with Dahlias and Gladiolas. Sunday dinners with homemade apple pies on Rosenthal Road were eagerly anticipated by her children and grandchildren.
Mom had a very positive outlook, was a colourful and warm character with a delightful sense of humour. She loved politics, hockey, socializing, playing the lottery, knitting socks and mittens for charity and volunteering for the Bulkley Valley Fall Fair. Part of her social network was having lunch with her friends at the seniors' centre.
She met Larry McGinnis in the early 1980's and spent many wonderful years travelling together to Mexico in their motorhome and later spent lots of enjoyable years in their Pearlar cabin on Francois Lake, fishing, entertaining friends and family, and playing cards. She only beat Larry once playing crib!
Pearl spent the rest of her days in the Meadows where she always looked forward to phone calls from friends and relatives. She celebrated happy hours in the last year with outside visitors on her patio.
A very special thank you to the staff of the Bulkley Valley Hospital, the Meadows, her son, Jerry and daughter-in-law, Debbie, for their loving care in the last year of her life.
A small memorial is tentatively planned for this summer in Smithers with immediate family and friends when its possible. Peace be with you, Pearl. There will always be a happy hour up there!
