Norman Groot

February 22, 1937 - April 25, 2015

Norman Groot was born February 22, 1937 in Andijk, Netherlands. He was the third child born to Pieterman and Ida Groot. The family immigrated to Canada in 1938 when Norman was 13 months old. They lived, farmed and logged near Houston B.C. Three more siblings were added to the family.

Norman married Alida Euverman on May 3, 1961, in Houston, B.C. They moved to Smithers where Norman was a logging truck driver. Later he became partners with his brother Dick in D. Groot Logging. He loved his work. For 30 years his life revolved around the mill and he seldom took a vacation. He retired when he was 52.

Norman and Alida had five children, seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild. They were married for 54 years.

After retirement Norman enjoyed walking, golfing, working in his yard & puzzling.

He was a lifetime member of the Smithers Christian Reformed Church seldom missing a service and always sat in the same pew.

He loved all his grandchildren and always showed a great interest in how and what they were doing.

The effect of dementia made Norman’s last year’s confusing for him. In October 2014 he moved into the Bulkley Lodge. We thank Dr. Blouw and the staff there for taking very good care of Norman the past six months. On April 25 Norman passed away from complications due to dementia.

We will remember dad/grandpa for his great smile, generosity, great work ethic and determination to get things done.

A memorial service was held by the Smithers Christian Reformed Church on April 30 with Pastor Ken VanderHorst officiating.

“Surely goodness and love with follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6
