Martha Goudy (Dahlie)

Nov. 24, 1922 to Feb. 26, 2007

Martha died peacefully at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital on Feb. 26, 2007. Born in Ringsaker, Norway, she emigrated to Canada in 1929 as a young child with her family. In June 1933 the family moved to Smithers from Holden, Alberta. While growing up, Martha was an avid skier, and was one of the first women to compete in ski jumping, placing third in a competition in 1936. She met Jack while she was enlisted in the RCAF. After their marriage in 1943, they settled in Smithers and raised their family here. Martha made many friends and acquaintances throughout the Bulkley Valley while working 40 plus years at what was once the only doctor’s office in town. Martha enjoyed many years of traveling; she loved to golf and spend time with her friends and family.

Martha was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1999. Martha is survived by her brothers Jorgen (Shirley) and Hallvard (Betty), her children Linda Goudy (Al Dunn), Sylvia Pearson (Garth), Kathryn Goudy (Joe Trotta), and Norman Goudy. She is also survived by grandchildren Terry, Brett, Lisa, and Scott (Caroline) Marko, Christine Vandenbrink (Mark), Laura Lillies (Wayne), Glenn Pearson (Jane), Ryan, Sean and Julia Goudy, Grant and Kristen Johnson an 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on March 2 at the Smithers United Church, Reverend George Richmond officiating. R.A. Schrader Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Martha’s family wishes to extend their thanks and appreciation to Dr. Bastian, Dr. Scholtz and the staff of the Bulkley Valley District Hospital. We would also like to thank all of mom’s friends who made her last year so pleasurable for her.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bulkley Valley foundation were requested.
