March 3, 1931 - May 2, 2021
It is with heartfelt love that we announce the passing of Margret Mettler, 90 years old, of Smithers, BC, Canada. She passed away peacefully May 2, 2021.
Born Margarete Saier, March 3, 1931 in Buchenbach Germany, to Wilhelm Saier and Paulina Bartberger Saier.
She had 2 sisters, Liesel & Hermine, and 2 brothers, Hubert & Edmund. The family tree goes back to 1550, Peter Saier, Atlenvogtshof, Wagensteig, Germany.
At 20 years old Margret fell in love with a family friend, from Goldau Switzerland, named Josef Mettler. After accepting his marriage proposal, she purchased passage on a ship sailing from Bremen Germany to Halifax Canada.
Following their marriage in Clandeboye Manitoba, October 23, 1954, at the home of relatives on both sides, Joe & Frieda Kamer, they moved to Winnipeg for a short time.
The newlyweds threw caution to the wind and took a train across Canada where Joe found work at Alcan in Kitimat BC and Margret worked in a local restaurant until the arrival of Joe Jr. in 1955, followed by Rick in 1959.
In 1960 the family moved to Smithers and lived at Dohler's farm. Then purchased a home on 2nd Ave. and lived there until Joe built their family home on First Avenue in 1965, where they remained.
Anita arrived in 1961 and Mike in 1965. Her family and whole world was complete until her last day on this earth.
Margret's picture will be found in the dictionary under "perfect mother". Her love and understanding of all children, was her most notable gift.
She was happiest when caring for others. When her kids grew up, she babysat and loved every moment. Her grandchildren were the world to her, and they will forever have memories of the love she showered on them.
An avid athlete Margret enjoyed badminton and competed in B.C. Senior Games. She enjoyed cross country skiing, hiking and riding her bicycle right up into her 80's when she had no one left to challenge on the trails.
Margret loved sewing, knitting, crocheting and her fingers seemed to fly with scissors, needles, pins, yarn and fabric.
Planting and harvesting her bountiful garden, was her pride and joy. She cooked and canned and made mouth-watering food. Favorites had to be her rouladen, potato salad, black forest cake, raspberries and chocolate mousse and let's not forget, the best bread and buns. (Randy's favorite)
Many people will remember Margret from her days working at the arena in the concession. She said she might as well get paid for being there what with the 3 boys all playing hockey and Joe coaching.
On February 20, 1998 Margret was presented with a certificate of appreciation "As A Good Neighbour" from North Country Insurance Agencies. She was deeply humbled.
Proud moments for Margret were at age 50 passing her 1st driver's license and shortly after, achieving her Canadian Citizenship Certificate.
Margret loved her Catholic faith and coffee at A & W following Sunday service.
Margret is survived by her sisters Liesel and Hermine and brother Hubert in Germany, her children Joe (Elaine), Rick (Larkin), Anita (Randy), Mike (Brigitte), 6 grandchildren, Alicia & Brad, Chelsi & Justin, Kyle & Hayden, and 5 great grandchildren.
Margret is predeceased by her husband Joe, in 1982.
A special thank you to all the caring staff and Doctors at the Bulkley Lodge and her daughter and son Anita and Mike for their loving care in the past couple of hard years.
A Memorial is tentatively planned this summer when we can all celebrate together and thank Margret for the wonderful memories that bring us peace and love. The Mettler Family.
