August 27, 1946 - May 13, 2021
It is with a sad and heavy heart that we announce the passing of Malcolm Davis Chaplin. On May 13, 2021. Malcolm passed away at the Bulkley Lodge, surrounded by his wife and sons.
Born on August 27, 1946, Malcolm Davis Chaplin was the 3rd child of Charlie and Laura Chaplin of Smithers, BC. As a young boy, Malcolm helped his dad Charlie and brother Murray clear the land at Smithers Landing on Babine Lake for the hunting and fishing lodge known as Tukkii Lodge. Malcolm worked there with his family until it was sold in 1978.
Malcolm and Bernadette married in 1971 and raised two sons, Bryan and Jayson.
He was an active person and was always available to lend a helping hand to family and friends. Malcolm and good friend Ted Bobb started the Beaver Club for boys in Smithers and went on to coach Little League Baseball.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Smithers for almost 50 years. He became Worshipful Master in 1978 and 2004 and District Deputy Grand Master in 1992. He was also a helping hand in starting the Shriners Club for Children and was able to help some children in Smithers.
Malcolm worked at PIR here in Smithers until his retirement in 2005 as the Planer Superintendent. He enjoyed curling, golfing, and downhill skiing and had passed on the passion of these sports to his sons.
He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandsons, Zach and Adam (his Buddy). He spent a lot of time woodworking, creating a variety of things such as building boats, cupboards, dressers, lawn furniture, toy trucks, and much more.
Malcolm and Bernie enjoyed travelling extensively over the years, mostly during our long northern BC winters to warmer climates.
Malcolm will be very sadly missed by his wife of 50 years, sons Bryan (Karlene), and Jayson (Julie); grandchildren Zach, Adam, Tristen and Dharma (his Shining Stars); brother Murray (Alice); sisters Maureen (Bob), Kathy (Ken), and nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Laura Chaplin and brother-in-law Bob Gordon.
Thank you to our friends for all the support you have provided us during this difficult time, it means a lot. A very special thank you to Dr. Scholtz and the staff at the Bulkley Lodge-you are truly wonderful people.
Malcolm, you will always be in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.
