John Schaap, born June 15, 1930 in Akkrum, Holland, died December 13, 2015 in Smithers, Canada. As an outdoorsman and proud Canadian, John very much appreciated the many years he spent living, fishing and snowmobiling in the Bulkley Valley. John passed away on the birthday of the love of his life, his loving wife Dorothy Schaap, who predeceased him in January 2001.
With most of his blood relatives in far away places, John created a new family for himself here in Smithers, including the Callisons, Grudgfields, Wolnowskis and many more. He loved animals, children and many of the local diners and coffee shops.
Our greatest appreciation to the staff at the Bulkley Lodge, Drs. Paige and Blouw for their compassionate care in John’s final days.
A memorial service will be held Friday, January 8, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the R.A. Schrader Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Bulkley Lodge Palliative Care or Canadian Cancer Society.
