Johanna Holzer

In Loving Memory of Johanna Holzer (Gaube)

Nov. 1, 1921 - Oct. 20, 2006

Johanna Gaube, the oldest of a very large family, was born November 1, 1921, in Pernegg, Steiermark, Austria.

On May 22, 1948, she married Franz Holzer and in 1952 they both immigrated to Smithers, B.C., with their young daughter, Elfriede.

After living in Telkwa for a number of years and having three additional children – Brigitte, Frank and Mariana – they purchased a beautiful farm in the Quick area, along the Bulkley River.

Johanna attained her agriculture degree in Europe which proved in-valuable over the years on the farm. Working side by side with her loving husband of 58 years, whether calving season, haying, tending her large gardens and meeting the needs of her family, her strength never faded.

Johanna’s favourite pastime, when she could squeeze it into her daily routine, was to head to her special fishing hole on the Bulkley River. Over the years she became an avid fisherperson. Her dream was always to catch “the big one”.

Thirty-one years later, Johanna and Franz sold the farm and retired in Smithers. It took some time to adjust to a smaller piece of land but they enjoyed their new home.

Johanna is survived by her loving husband Franz, daughters Elfriede (Rix), Brigitte (Dan), Mariana (Darrell), and son Frank (Carla); grandchildren Daniel, Sydney and Sayannah.

Those we love don’t go away,

They walk beside us every day.

No longer in our life to share

But in our hearts she is always there.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a fund in memory of Johanna Holzer at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital. The funeral service will be held Oct. 27, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Smithers at 10 a.m., with Fr. Frank officiating.
