Gary Nicholson WHITE

WHITE, Gary Nicholson passed peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 20, 2006, after a long battle with ataxia. Born Jan. 6, 1940, in Vancouver. Son of the late William White and Irene Stinton. His older brother Billy was killed in Italy in 1944. Older brother Ken and wife Betty live at Logan Lake, BC.

During the later 1960s, was the outspoken editor of the Smithers Interior News. He met his partner of 34 years, John Veillette, in Vancouver in 1971 and together they travelled in B.C. recording pioneer churches and cemeteries. Together they worked on the restoration of St. Paul’s Kitwanga and the Salvation Army Citadel at Glen Vowell on the Skeena River. Co-author, in 1977, of Early Indian Village Churches (UBC Press).

Lived in Victoria since 1976 and over the years restored three heritage houses as well as being active in the Victoria Horticultural Society. Elected a life member in 2005. Gary, with his partner, travelled extensively in Mexico.

His sunny disposition and loyalty made him a popular and strong friend to many. His zest for life will be much missed by his partner, his extended family and his friends.

A memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Sequoia Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive (Royal Oak Exit), Victoria.
