September 7, 1944 - July 24, 2021
Frederick Arthur "Art" Bingham was born on September 7, 1944 in Summerside, P.E.I. to Frederick Emery and Thyra Mildred (nee Clark). He passed away peacefully on July 24, 2021 at home, surrounded by his family.
On February 17, 1968, he married the love of his life, Deanna in Charlottetown, P.E.I. They moved to Toronto shortly after being married, where he graduated from Ryerson with a degree in Public Health Inspection.
In 1978 his career took Deanna and their three young children to Inuvik, N.W.T. From there they spent time in Whitehorse, YT and High Level, AB. They spent their weekends camping in the summer and curling as a family team in the winters. He loved curling. One of his proudest moments was coaching a junior men's team to the Nationals. Art believed that team sports made children stronger people and he encouraged his children to play any sport they chose.
In 2005, he finally retired and he and Deanna made the move back to the east coast. They bought a property in Nova Scotia, and settled in to enjoy retirement. In his retirement, Art became involved in working with special needs adults. He believed that every person deserved to be recognized as special and unique, and he mentored "his kids" with pride. He always led by example. It was easy for him to touch lives... it's just who he was.
In 2016, he and Deanna were sitting there and he said "why are we so far away from our kids?". So, they packed up and moved to Smithers, BC to be closer to their children and grandchildren. While Art loved his children dearly, his grandchildren were the shining light in his life. He adored being "Papa". He said once that it was his greatest achievement.
Art was a remarkable man. He was the kind of guy that you would meet once and remember forever. He could talk to anyone about anything. He loved going for coffee and striking up conversations with people he didn't know.
Art is survived by his soul mate of 53 years, Deanna; His daughter Shawna (Scott) Martin; son John David (Crystal) Bingham; son Ron (Krystal) Bingham; grandsons Eric (Ashley), Levi, Evan, Owen and James; granddaughters Nadine (Joel), Emily, Rachel and Jennifer; great- grandchildren Kane, Elle, Lilah and Mauve.
A celebration of life will be held on September 11, 2021 at 2 pm at the home of his daughter Shawna (1515 Morice Drive, Smithers, BC).
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Art's name to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada.
