In Loving Memory ~
Evan James McCallum passed away June 3, 2023 at Vancouver General Hospital. He was just 45 years old. Evan was admitted to hospital March 3 due to a streptococcal infection acquired during his February deployment in the UK. He suffered multi-organ failure and septic shock, requiring heart surgery and a double amputation. During his three months in ICU he received outstanding care and tried valiantly to live, but it was not to be.
Evan is survived by his young son Alex, his parents Hugh and Mary, his sisters Amy (Damien) and Katie (Eerik) as well as a niece (Silvi) and three nephews (Elliot, Oscar and Allan).
His wife Jennifer pre-deceased him in 2021. He was a proud father, a loving son, a faithful brother and to the kids he was their beloved Uncle Muffin.
Evan's loss is mourned by a legion of people the world over. In his twenty year career as a commercial pilot he flew in places ranging from the Arctic to Africa, South America and Europe. Over the past eight years he managed an aviation contract with the Royal Air Force, on behalf of Summit Air.
He was a skilled pilot, a wonderful boss and the ultimate "people person" no matter where in the world you met him.
Outdoor adventure was a constant part of Evan's life and he shared the fun with Alex and both their friends. Whatever it was, he had the gear. He was always happy on his land, which overlooks Round Lake and the Telkwa Range.
He was born and raised in Langley, but Smithers became his hometown many years ago and he appreciated the amazing support of his community through the best of times and the worst of times.
His sense of humour, kindness and authenticity made him a beloved friend. He was a generous soul, and was usually a pushover with the kids.
Passionate about animals, Ev was especially close with his dogs Rocky and Farley and he put up with the cats too. You will know Evan's spirit is near if you spot an Osprey Fish Hawk or a Peregrine Falcon.
Evan instantly brightened any room and all of our lives were better for having him there. Our hearts are broken that he left us so soon, but we can say confidently that Evan experienced more in his 45 years that most folks could in 90. His final flight was taken on his dear Grandma Ruby's birthday. It was a beautiful day and a full moon that took him to his rest.
We will be organizing a fundraising campaign for Alex's education in lieu of flowers, please get in touch with family for more details or search GoFundMe.com for Alex McCallum.
We will miss you forever dear Evan.
