Doris Stahel

Born December 10, 1929 in Zurich, Switzerland

Passed Away April 17, 2003 in Smithers, B.C.

Survived by husband, Alfred Stahel; daughters, Dorothy Premack and Anne (Brian) Reive; sons, Albert (Margaret) Stahel, Robert (Cheryl Anne) Stahel; grandchildren, Tonya (Darryl) Ludwig, Cory Booker, Heather Reive, Cameron Reive, Alicia Stahel, Skyler Stahel; and great-grandchild, Quidje-Bo Ludwig.

In 1937, Doris immigrated to Canada with her family. They settled on a farm in the Driftwood area. Doris attended school in Driftwood then graduated from Smithers Secondary in 1947.

Later she worked for the Sisters of St. Anne which is now the Bulkley Valley District Hospital, the Pool Hall and Cafe and at School District # 54 where she was known as “Super Granny” to the students. Doris married Alfred Stahel on August 9, 1951 in the Smithers United Church. They raised 2 daughters and 2 sons on the family farm in Driftwood.

Doris was an integral part of the Driftwood community and developed many lifelong friendships. She was a lifetime member of the Glenwood Women’s Institute. She helped construct the Glenwood Hall and was a regular fixture at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition. Doris donated countless hours canvassing for charities and donated to any cause her grandchildren asked of her. She loved to be active. She played golf, collected many bowling trophies and coached youth and special bowling league teams.

Doris was deeply devoted to her grandchildren. She delighted in their individuality, nurtured and encouraged their strengths, took pride in their successes, and had an unfailing faith in their ability to be the best they could.

Doris would want us to remember her strength and courage when faced with adversity; her strength and commitment to family values and the work ethic; and the strength of her bond to family, dear friends and her community.

This was Doris: wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, staunch friend and colleague. We can honour her memory by honouring our families and being a good neighbour to all.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Glenwood Hall committee at the B.V. Credit Union.
