Don Sims passed away at the age of 71 years on November 22, 2022, in Smithers, BC. Don was born Nov. 25, 1950 in Kamsack Sask. He was very active in sports, music and Air Cadets and received his first flying license through Cadets. Don attended the University of Saskatchewan before hiring on CNR in Jasper in the mid 70's and moved to Smithers a few years later. He retired in 2005.
Don loved fishing, hunting, music, woodworking and windsurfing. He was a master gardener known for his roses, fruit trees and veggies. He was an exacting barista and roasted his own beans.
Don's love of skiing saw him winning the Schussboomer Downhill in 2002(at age 52) at a speed of 126 kph. He won the Kermode Kut in Terrace at a speed of 134 kph...not bad for a kid from Saskatchewan!
A Celebration of Ski Life will be held Sunday, March 12, 2023, at Whiskey Jack's lounge on Hudson Bay Mountain starting at 4:30 after a day of skiing. Food and drinks will be available for purchase from the restaurant. There will be live music and tributes. Everyone is welcome to the celebration for this reserved, kind and accomplished man who will be missed by those lucky enough to call him a friend.
