In loving of memory

David Roy Hayhurst

November 21, 1957 - August 25, 2009

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Roy Hayhurst after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. In his home, surrounded by family, he slipped peacefully into the presence of his Lord. His suffering is over, and though we long to have him here, we know that he is alive in Christ and that we shall meet again.

Dave was passionate about sports and gave it everything he had…and more! Fiercely competitive, he threw himself into sports, like hockey, curling and baseball, a passion that continued all his life. He got just as much satisfaction out of watching his own children compete in sports and was always willing to go on out of town trips. Cory, Lucas, Devon and Shawni had no bigger fan than their Dad.

He was an extremely hard working individual with an enviable work ethic. He established life long friendships with those he worked with. Dave came to Smithers in 1976 to work for his brother-in-law Garry in the logging industry. He also worked for Blunt Creek Logging, Stamco Construction, Durack Logging, BV Weedbusters, Evergreen Industrial and most recently at Spring Creek Aggregate since 2007. Though work was very important to him, his family was priority. He valued the time spent at home with them because often it wasn’t long enough.

Dave is survived by his loving wife Claudia, his children Cory (Amanda) and grand daughter Kiana of Prince George and Lucas, Devon and Shawni of Smithers. Mother, Shirley (Glen) Baker of Smithers, Father, Roy (Marg) Hayhurst of Quesnel, Nana, Elisabeth Holenstein of Smithers, sisters, Charmaine (Dennis) Schweitzer of Quesnel, Kelleen (Garry) Ferster of Smithers and brother Dwayne (Cindy) Hayhurst of Quesnel.

Dave is also survived by a large extended family of brothers and sisters in-law, aunts, uncles and numerous nieces and nephews, who love him deeply.

Thank you so much to all of our family, friends, neighbours, church family, St. Joe’s family, Dave’s work crew and community. We are humbled by your endless love, support and constant prayers. The countless blessings of food, flowers, cards, gifts, kind words, hugs and reception and dinner after the service. Absolutely amazing and incredible, thank you , thank you, thank you!

Thank you to Dr Strauss and the staff at Broadway Medical Clinic for your care.

To Dr. Bastian and her amazing Cancer Care and Palliative team, we can’t say enough. Your sensitivity, compassion and respect for Dave and our family gave us the strength and confidence to fulfill Dave’s wish to be cared for at home.

It has done our hearts good to see how much Dave was loved and for that we will be forever grateful.

Claudia, Cory, Amanda, Kiana, Lucas, Devon and Shawni
