Mrs. Bernice Dorthory Aspeslet, age 81 of Vernon BC, passed away the morning of January 22, 2020, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer at the Vernon Hospice House.
She was born December 1938, in Hazelton BC, the only daughter of late Francis (Love) and Jack Lee.
Bernice is survived by her husband Dave Aspeslet, her two daughters Marney (John) Wookey and Cindie Aspeslet, her brother Wilfred Lee. Grandmother of Wanda (Jason) Belisle, David
Wookey (Emma Stephans), Lori-Anna (Darren) Tiljoe, Kale Bellingroth and Justin Aspeslet.
And the great grandmother of Brianna, Peyton, Odin, Abigail, Alec, Ryder, Urjhai and Nolan, which she loved to brag about.
On June 20, 1958, she married David Clifford Aspeslet, formally of Telkwa. Bernice worked as a telephone operator. In 1969 they bought Francis and Jack's farm in the Kispiox Valley, where they raised their two daughters, Marney and Cindie.
Bernice was the 1953 Kispiox Valley Rodeo Queen and a skilled farm wife, spending long days on the tractor and tending livestock. An active member of the Farms Institute. She enjoyed working in her garden, flowerbeds and greenhouse. And loved spending time with family huckleberry picking, cross country skiing, rafting and fishing. Bernice was famous for her Sunday suppers, homemade root beer and ice cream. There was always a pot of coffee brewing on the wood stove and a fresh cake for company.
1994 Dave and Bernice retired from farming, bought an RV and headed to the Okanagan. They settled at Swan Lake RV Resort in Vernon, they had many great adventures exploring the Okanagan and made countless meaningful friendships at the park.
Bernice will be missed by family and numerous friends. A memorial tea will be held in the spring in the Kispiox Valley. The family suggests donations can be made in Bernice's name to your local hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society.
