Axel was born in Evelyn BC to proud parents, Axel and Elvira Peterson. When he was still a baby, his parents moved the family to a farm in Driftwood where they raised a family of 9 children. He married Margaret Bradley in 1956. They moved their family back to the Peterson farm in the late 60's where they raised a family.
He had began his career for the CNR very early in life and continued to work on the farm. When the work was done, you would most likely find them bowling or at 5 mile on Babine Lake.
He later married Donna Gamache and extended his work experience to hotel management when he and Donna bought the Tyee Motor Hotel. He moved off of the farm into Smithers in these years freeing up time from the farm and would often be found on Hudson Bay Mountain skiing or curling.
He and Geri Britton married in 2004. When Geri retired, they would spend their winters in sunny San Carlos Mexico where they had numerous adventures with family and friends. 5 mile on Babine Lake remained a favorite in their lives as well as their ocean adventures. He often travelled to Alberta visiting family in Edmonton and Oyen and had a strong connection with his family in Sweden.
In 1991 Axel retired from the CNR after a 40 year career. After a short retirement he went to work for VIA rail. Axel loved and was very proud of his career on the railway (CNR and VIA Rail). He was a great storyteller and entertained passengers with stories of his adventures on the rails and pointed out the many sights between Prince George and Prince Rupert.
Axel travelled the world but would often say his favorite trips were to Sweden and to Africa where a monkey stole his lunch and a black mamba got into his camera bag.
Our memories of his enthusiasm for life, love of family, friends, sense of humour, laughter, music, good food and history will forever be cherished.
Axel is survived by his wife, Geri, children, Cathy (Don), Rod, Brad (Crystal), Mitchell, stepsons Jim (Lola), Brad (Lyndsy), grandchildren, Ashley, Axel, Jessica, Luke, Cassie, Liam, Mia, Eli, Rowan, Nicole, Miguel, Alondra, Zachary, Owen and Mason, as well as sisters Ingrid (Vern), and Margit and numerous nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
Axel passed away peacefully at BVDH surrounded by family.
Many thanks to Dr. Scholtz, the third floor nursing staff and all the support people who assisted during Axel's time at home and all of our friends and neighbours for their thoughtfulness and compassion.
