ALMA MOSS
September 17, 1915 —
November 6, 2004
Alma passed away peacefully on
November 6, 2004 at the Bulkley
Lodge, her home for the last two
years.
Alma was born in New Liskeard in
northern Ontario, the second of •ve
children. She grew up on a farm
and then moved to Timmins to study
nursing. She became a registered
nurse in 1938 and nursed in Timmins
for several years. During that time
she met her husband to be, Albert
(Ab) Moss, a geologist who worked
in the area.
They were married in 1943 and
shortly afterwards moved to
Montreal where they lived for 13
years and their daughter Patricia
(Pat) was born. Ab•s geology career
then took them to Labrador for eight
years, back to Montreal for two, and
•nally to Edmonton for six years,
before they retired to Victoria in
1973.
Both Ab and Alma were avid
gardeners and they had a lovely
big garden in Victoria which gave
them much pleasure. They enjoyed
being able to garden all year and
no longer have to shovel snow. Ab
died in 1985 and Alma continued
to live in the family home until she
was 80. At that point she moved to
an apartment in independent living
at Oak Bay Lodge. She lived there
for seven years but when her health
deteriorated and she needed more
care, she moved to Smithers to be
close to her daughter Pat.
Alma was a great reader and it was
very hard for her when she lost her
eyesight shortly before moving to
Smithers. She enjoyed being read
to though and got great pleasure
from Pat and other friends reading
books to her. Alma had lots of
friends across the country, many of
them going back to Labrador days,
and she kept in touch with them
regularly until her death. In the last
years when she could no longer see,
Pat became her reader and scribe.
Alma loved tea parties and organized
hundreds during her lifetime. In
her •nal two years in Smithers, Pat
arranged many small tea parties with
Alma, including the last one two
days before she died. By then Alma
was no longer eating or drinking but
she still enjoyed the social aspect.
Alma will be remembered fondly
by her loving daughter Pat Moss,
her sister Elizabeth Lentine, her
brother Walter Hobbs, and other
family members and friends across
Canada.
