Alma Bertha Victoria Lacey
1910-2014
Alma was the first born child of Swedish immigrants Benjt and Ida Anderson. She grew up on the family farm at Denvers Manitoba near Erickson which had its centennial in 2008. Alma moved to Winnipeg at the age of fifteen with two neighbor girls, Edith and Bertha Strand. She was first employed in housekeeping and later became a hairdresser and waitress. She married William Lacey June 6, 1932. She had two daughters, Jeanette (Frank) Gocal of Calgary and Karen Jackie Hoskins of Smithers. She was widowed in 1956 and returned to the work force catering and then as an employee of Eatons where she remained until she was 66.
Grandma is loved by her five grandsons; Gregory (Lara) Gocal of Sand Diego, Darren Gocal of Vancouver, Brent Hoskins (Vicky) of Smithers, Barclay (Corrie) Hoskins of 108 Mile House. She also has 9 great grandchildren; Julia, Pheobe, Cade, Josephine and Madelyn Gocal , Madelyn and Lillith Hoskins and Cassie and Lauren Horning-Wandler. Her last bedside wishes were that they all be “good people”.
Alma was predeceased by her daughter Jeanette Gocal; her sister Lily Johnson (Oscar) of Winnipeg and three brothers Albin (Eva) of Erickson, Clifford (Isabelle) of Edmonton and Willard (Juanita) of Masoncity, Iowa.
Alma is a cancer survivor of 50 years and has lived with macular degeneration for 20 years. She has been an amazing person never complaining and embracing both life and people. She spent the last 5 ½ years of her life at the Meadows in Smithers. The family would like to thank the staff and the Northern care workers for their understanding and support, particularly this past year. We would also like to extend a big ‘Thank You’ to all the residents for their hugs and kindnesses, and to Fofo, Horace and Maria who have been mom’s friends since she moved to Smithers.
A Memorial Service for Alma will be held Friday, Sept. 19th at 2:00 pm at The Meadows on 1180 Alberta Street in Smithers.
