Waiting for info on RD money

Telkwa council is still trying to figure everything out after finding out they can’t benefit directly from money the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako has for the community to go towards recycling initiatives.

At the last Telkwa council meeting, Mayor Carman Graf said that he had spoken to representatives of the RDBN recently on the issue of what will happen to the money and was told they would have to get back to him with an answer.

Councillors are still sore from a lengthy back-and-forth where they were trying to establish a recycling program — at last draft it would have been a drop-off bin at the waste transfer station.

“The thing that bugs me ... the regional director said that municipalities never qualified,” said Taylor Bachrach, referring to the eight month process of applying for the money.

Graf emphasized that through all of the meetings he had attended he heard nothing of the municipal exception to the eligibility.

Meanwhile, the regional district has okayed two environmental projects. $9,050 is going towards Houston society Healthy Options for People and the Earth Society for a composting program and Fort St. James’ Greening Up Fort Society will start a paper and cardboard recycling program with $50,901.
