Another meeting was held to try and revive the Citizens on Patrol (COP) program in Smithers.

A meeting in November saw a huge turnout, but last week’s was much smaller.

However, community safety officer, Dave Pruden said there is still a lot of interest in the program.

Previously, the organization had more than 40 volunteers, but COVID-19 and volunteer burnout were essentially the death knell for the group a few years back.

Recent upticks in burglaries, theft, and various other crimes, however, have generated the impetus for the group to become re-energized.

Pruden said a few people stepped up at Thursday’s meeting to start an executive board to get the ball rolling.

Ideally, the group would like to start this summer.

COP will be run from the community policing office on First Street in Smithers, which is where people may also sign up.
