Strong winds cut power to more than 200 in Smithers

More than 200 Smithers properties are without power after a wind storm caused outages overnight.

Strong winds overnight have caused power outages currently affecting more than 200 Smithers properties.

More than 5,400 BC Hydro customers across the region are without power, including more than 25 in Houston.

Fallen trees caused some of the outages and delayed one Bulkley Valley school bus route on Woodmere Road.

Environment Canada forecasts southerly winds of 40 kilometres an hour gusting to 70km/h this morning, slowing to 30km/h with gusts of 50km/h in the afternoon.
