Smithers RCMP respond to theft in progress, arrest two

Shawn Arsenault, wanted on outstanding warrants in BC and Alberta, remains in custody

Smithers RCMP have arrested two people following an alleged theft on Saturday (July 8).

Police received a report of a theft in progress from a residence in the community.

Officers immediately attended and located two suspects who fled from the scene upon police arrival.

Both individuals were quickly arrested without further incident.

Shawn Arsenault has been charged in connection with this theft and remains in custody. BC Prosecution Services have approved the following charges: two counts of failure to comply with a release order; one count of theft over $5,000; and one count of obstruction.

Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said at the time of his arrest, Arsenault was wanted on warrants on other matters out of Prince George, Williams Lake and Alberta.

The other individual arrested, an adult woman, was released on an undertaking for a court date in October 2023.
