Smithers' businesses destroyed by fire

Fire tore through two Smithers businesses at about 4 a.m. this morning.

Witnesses report hearing a loud explosion moments before a fire tore through the 1000 block of Main St. at about 4 a.m. this morning, destroying Hometown Furniture and Perry and Co.

The fire was in the buildings adjacent to the newly-opened Bovil Square and stage at the corner of Main St. and Broadway Ave.

Members of the Smithers and Telkwa Volunteer Fire Departments remain on the scene.

No one was injured in the fire.

For the remainder of Homecoming week, acts scheduled to appear at Bovil Square have been moved to Husky Park, at the corner of Main St. and Hwy 16.

Main St. between Broadway and Alfred Ave. is closed.

The cause of the blaze is not known at this time.
