Some residents in Ebenezer Flats are be eligible to take sandbags from the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako (RDBN) as the flood risk continues for the area.

Lance Hamblin, RDBN Chair, said that as of Wednesday, Jan. 5, the regional district has started to offer sandbags to residents.

People can grab a “request for sandbags” off their website at www.rdbn.bc.ca or they can call 1-800-320-3339.

As for the river, over the last few days there has been improvement.

“The actual water has receded in the last couple of days so we’re not overly concerned but we want people to be ready because it could change,” he said.

He noted the flooding in Telkwa two years ago saw the river suddenly rise over a matter of hours.

“People need to be aware and be alert and not be doing things on the river.”

What the river will actually do over the next few days, or how fast water would rise in the event of a flooding, is entirely dependent on the weather.

“We’ll roll with the punches on it,” he said.

The regional district’s websites have the most up to date information on the flooding, including guidelines on how people can prepare themselves in a flood.

That includes preparing an emergency supply kit with at least three-day’s food supply for each family member, and a wind-up radio and flashlight.

Visit the regional district’s website at www.rdbn.bc.ca for more information.

As of press time the status of the flood remained unchanged since Jan. 5.
