Matthew Monkman may be retiring from his job as assistant superintendent of School District 54, but he’s not retiring from being an educator.

As of Jan. 1, 2024 Monkman will become the superintendent for the Nisga’a School District 92 in the Nass Valley north of Terrace.

“We’ve were very happy to see and hear from a fine leader who has the background and passion we have been seeking,” said School District 92 board chair Winnie Morven-Hansen.

“He is the right person to build on the work led by outgoing superintendent Jill Jensen.

Jensen is off to work for the Gulf Islands School District.

Monkman will also have the title chief executive officer and his initial contract is for one year.

School District 92 has schools in the four villages of the Nass Valley — an elementary school in Gingolx, an elementary school in Laxgalts’ap, an elementary school in Gitwinksihlkw and a K-12 school in Gitlaxt’aamiks, the largest community.

The school district has approximately 370 students with the majority being Nisga’a citizens.

It was created in 1975 as the first Indigenous school district in the province.
