RCMP deal with a rollover and a fight in separate incidents

No charges for fight described as bad judgment in front of students at Walnut Park school.

Altercation near Walnut Park Elementary Interrupts Play at Lunch Break

On Monday, Jan. 10, Smithers RCMP received a report of a fight involving two men on a roadway near Walnut Park Elementary School.

The initial report indicated a bat was involved, and one of the men had departed the location on foot. Police attended and were able to locate both males. An arrest was made and investigation ensued.

Staff at the school were able to corroborate, in part, what was being reported by the males involved, who had different versions of the event. Ultimately is was determined an argument involving personal conflict escalated to a brief physical fight. No one was struck with any weapons, and no one was injured.

Both were made aware of the unsettling impact their poor judgment had on children watching. At this time no charges are being recommended by police.

Driver rolls pickup truck near Telkwa, everyone OK

On Jan. 14, just after midnight, the Smithers RCMP received responded to a report of a single vehicle collision just outside of Telkwa. The pickup truck involved had rolled over and a passenger had been taken to the hospital by a passerby wanting to help.

The incident occurred near Highway 16 and Van Horn Frontage Road in Telkwa. At the time, inclement weather caused roads to be slippery and visibility was relatively poor. The driver had lost control while travelling westbound and ended up in the ditch.

The investigation revealed the driver had been travelling too fast for the road conditions. The driver was issued appropriate Motor Vehicle Act violation tickets for identified infractions.

The vehicle sustained extensive damage, was no longer driveable and needed to be towed. No serious injuries resulted from the incident which serves as a clear reminder to always drive to road conditions, and be reasonably cautious.
