An RCMP officer was flagged down at around 5:30 p.m. on Highway 16 by a passer-by who stated that a vehicle behind him was swerving all over the road. The officer initiated a vehicle stop with a black Ford pick-up and spoke to the 59-year-old driver. The driver displayed signs of marijuana impairment and the officer could also smell marijuana in the cab. The driver and all of the vehicle's occupants were subsequently arrested for possession of a controlled substance - one of the passengers was found with a small quanity of marijuana, the RCMP say, which was seized. The driver was issued a 24-hour roadside prohibition, and all persons at the scene were released with no charges being pursued.

A black 1959 Chevy pick-up truck was stolen from the Laidlaw trailer park. The owner stated that it was taken sometime between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. The truck was left unlocked with the keys inside. At around 2 p.m. on July 21, the vehicle was recovered in an alley off 12th Avenue in Smithers. A witness said they observed someone drive the truck into the alley where the vehicle got stuck on wet grass. The witness went into their backyard to see and the male jumped out, covered his face with his black hoodie, and left on foot.

The male is described as First Nations in his early 20s, 5'8", between 160 to 170 lbs (approximately 77 kg) with a stocky build. He wore the black hoody and blue jeans.

General

The Smithers RCMP have noted an increase in stolen quads or attempted thefts of quads in the Moricetown area in the past two weeks. The RCMP would like to remind the public to take security precautions to protect these recreational vehicles. It is recommended that the keys be kept in a secure area, not in the quad, when the vehicle is not being used. If possible keep the vehicle in a secure, locked area like a garage.
